Petrol price likely to be cut by Rs 4/lit on July 1

After much hue and cry, petrol price is likely to be reduced by upto Rs 4 per litre from July says a media report. The continuous fall in crude price touching almost near eight-month lows is probably the trigger.
However, in an interview to CNBC-TV18 , Sudhir Vasudeva, Chairman, ONGC had said that under recovery won't fall even though crude oil price have decreased.
He said, "Depreciation of rupee is 20% which wipes out all the gain of oil price decrease. As far as the subsidy is concerned we have been instructed only to pay that provisionally USD 56 a barrel."
The government faced severe criticism after it raised petrol price the by Rs 7.54 a litre on May 23.

Google unveils $199 Nexus 7 to take on iPad, Kindle

Google Inc took the wraps off its first tablet computer on Wednesday, looking to replicate its smartphone success in the tablet market despite tough competition from Apple Inc, Microsoft and Amazon.

The "Nexus 7" tablet, built by and co-branded with Taiwan's Asus, will begin selling for as low as $199 on the Google Play website and apps store from around mid-July.

At 7 inches and $199, the device takes aim initially at the Kindle model, which analysts consider a window into Amazon.com's trove of online content.

Google can similarly use the Nexus 7 - unveiled at its annual developer conference in San Francisco - to connect to its own online offerings, which include video service YouTube and Google Play. It will go after more cost-conscious users who might shun the loftier price tag of $499 and above on Apple's iPad.

"That range of services will be the secret to stitching together this rag-tag fleet of Android gadgets into a platform that can compete with Apple for minutes of users' attention rather than premium device dollars," said Forrester analyst James McQuivey.

Shares in Google gained 0.8 percent to $569.37 in afternoon trade.

The Nexus will feature the new 4.1 "Jelly Bean" version of Google's software, as well as a front-facing camera, a 1280x800 resolution screen, and an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

Google's Android software is the No. 1 operating system for smartphones, but has struggled to compete with Apple's iPad in the market for tablets.

Executives showcased the new 4.1 "Jelly Bean" version of Android operating system at the event in San Francisco. The new software delivers faster performance, according to the company, and new features such as "voice search."

The Internet search leader said that 1 million devices using its Android mobile software are being activated every day.

Google briefly sold a specially designed Android smartphone - the Nexus One - directly to consumers in 2010, but closed the online store after four months saying it had not lived up to expectations.

Euro 2012: Spain beat Portugal on penalties to enter final

Donetsk: Spain reached their third consecutive major tournament final after overcoming neighbours Portugal 4-2 on penalties in the first Euro 2012 semi-final in Donetsk on Wednesday.
Euro 2012 | Matchcentre | Stats

After an attritional game finished 0-0 following extra time, Cesc Fabregas swept home the winning spot-kick to put Spain in the final.

Xabi Alonso and Joao Moutinho both saw their opening penalties saved, but Portugal blinked first when Zenit Saint-Petersburg centre-back Bruno Alves slammed his side's fourth penalty against the crossbar.

Fabregas stepped up and, just as he had done in the penalty shootout win over Italy in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals, the Barcelona man held his nerve, steering the ball into the bottom-left corner to send Portugal home.

Reigning world and European champions Spain, who are bidding to become the first team in history to win three major competitions in a row, will face either Italy or Germany in Sunday's final in Kiev.

It was a deeply disappointing end to the tournament for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who had threatened to fire his side into only their second major final but who did not even get a chance to have his say in the shoot-out.

A surprise inclusion in Spain's starting line-up, Alvaro Negredo was at the source of the game's first chance, with Alvaro Arbeloa side-footing over after the Sevilla striker was crowded out in the Portuguese area.

Portugal's match-winner against both the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, Ronaldo was a spectator in the first 10 minutes, but gradually his influence grew.

After fluffing a free-kick into the base of the wall from a tight angle on the left, he lashed a half-volley high over the crossbar from the edge of the area and then drilled a left-shot narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

As in the quarter-final win against France, Spain struggled to find holes in their opponent's defence, and it was a surprise to see Alonso club a long ball forward in the 29th minute.

It produced a sight of goal, however, with Andres Iniesta bending a shot narrowly over the bar after Negredo had chased down Alonso's pass, held off Fabio Coentrao, and worked the ball back to the edge of the area.

The snap in Portugal's tackles was helping them establish a presence in the Spanish half and with Negredo failing to provide enough of an outlet for Spain, it was no surprise to see him replaced by Fabregas early in the second half.

Del Bosque introduced Jesus Navas in place of David Silva, before Xavi worked Rui Patricio for the first time in the match with a speculative effort that found the Portugal goalkeeper's midriff.

Ronaldo had a fine opportunity to snatch a winner in the last minute of normal time but he could only shoot over from Raul Meireles' pass, prompting mocking cries of 'Messi! Messi!' from the Spain fans.

A succession of late flare-ups gave the game added spice going into extra time, and after a watchful opening, Spain finally began to show.

Shortly before half-time in the extra period, Iniesta drew the first real save of note from Patricio after ghosting into the box to meet Jordi Alba's cut-back.

Sergio Ramos then sent a free-kick whistling over the bar, while Navas tested Patricio early in the second half after wriggling down the inside-right channel in the Portuguese box.

Fabregas sent fellow substitute Pedro Rodriguez clear with seven minutes left but he delayed, allowing Coentrao to clear, and the time for penalties had arrived.

Delhi Power: Domestic prices up 24%; commercial up 19.5%

Delhiites – get ready for a major hike in your electricity bills.
Three private distribution companies - Tata Delhi Power, BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna, have received the go ahead from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to hike power tariffs.
“The increased tariff will be effective from July 1,” DERC Chairman PD Sudhakar announced at a press conference.
The steep hike in Delhi power tariffs will see domestic prices go up by 24% and commercial prices go up by 19.5%.
Additional charges of Fuel surcharge will put a further burden on the bills.
The DERC has said there won't be another hike in prices for the next two to three years.
Last year, the DERC allowed companies to raise tariff by 22% but it was not enough to cover the gap of Rs 6,000 crore spent by the three distribution utilities.
Price per unit till 200 unit will be Rs 3.70, price per unit from 200-400 units will be Rs 4.80 and price per unit for 400 units and above is Rs 6.40.
The power hikes in Delhi will be effective from July 1, 2012 and has been announced in almost all the categories including domestic and industrial.
An additional 8% surcharge will be levied on the overall electricity bill as well.

The Sarabjit-Surjeet goof up: One family shocked, another elated

Hours after reports emerged on Tuesday, that Pakistan was to free Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, the presidential spokesman clarified that authorities had taken steps for the release of another Indian prisoner named Surjeet Singh, and not Sarabjit.

Earlier yesterday, Pakistani media had reported that president Asif Ali Zardari had commuted the death sentence for Sarabjit Singh. As the news of Sarabjit's release broke out, even External Affairs Minister S M Krishna had thanked Mr Zardari over the purported move.

Sarabjit Singh's family, who had earlier expressed joy over his release, said they were disappointed and shocked, but they still hope that Sarabjit would be pardoned by president Zardari.

"India's Foreign Minister thanking Mr Zardari is a great gesture in itself. It isn't a small thing. I talked with many senior reporters in Pakistan. Many of them called me and told me about Sarbjit's release , " his sister Dalbir Kaur told NDTV.

"We were really shocked when we heard that Surjeet and not Sarabjit was being released. We hope the Pakistani Government would not have done this," said Swapandeep Kaur, Sarabjit's daughter.

"Congratulations to Surjeet Singh and his family. I hope my brother follows Surjeet Singh, and comes back home," said Dalbeer.

Meanwhile Surjeet Singh's family was elated with the news of his release. "My father has been in jail for three decades. His crime was that he crossed over the border. He completed his sentence five years ago, but is still in jail," said his son Kulwinder Singh. He also said, he hoped Sarabjit Singh was freed along with his father.

Ansar Burney, Pakistan's human rights activist too expressed surprise at this mistaken identity issue saying something was amiss in this whole issue. "The Presidency spokesperson spoke to several media houses in Pakistan and he never corrected anyone saying its Surjeet, not Sarabjit. However eight hours after the news flashing a clarification is issued.  There is something wrong in this. There could be some pressure on the Presidency or there is something else," said Mr Burney.

The clarification issued by the presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said "I think there is some confusion. First, it is not a case of pardon. More importantly, it is not Sarabjit. It is Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. His death sentence was commuted in 1989 by President (Ghulam) Ishaq (Khan) on the advice of (then premier) Benazir Bhutto," he said.

Mr Babar said Law Minister Farooq Naek on Tuesday conveyed to the Interior Ministry that Surjeet Singh had completed his life term in jail and ought to be released and sent back to India.

"Keeping him in jail any longer will be illegal confinement," he added.

Any references to President Asif Ali Zardari in the entire matter were "out of context", the presidential spokesman said.

Surjeet Singh, currently being held in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, has been in Pakistani captivity for over 30 years. He was captured near the border with India on charges of spying during the era of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.

Sarabjit Singh, who is also in the same jail as Surjeet Singh, was convicted for blasts in Lahore and Multan in 1990. At least 10 people were killed in those attacks. He has argued that he is innocent and that he is a farmer from Tarn-Taran who crossed the border by mistake. He was first given the death sentence by a Pakistani judge in 1991. Several appeals were rejected by different courts including the Supreme Court. Former Pakistani President had rejected his mercy petition.  His family has campaigned relentlessly for his release. He had sent a fresh clemency appeal to president Zardari in May this year.

Last month, Pakistani prisoner, Dr Khalil Chishty, who was in the Ajmer jail for nearly two decades, returned to his country. The 80-year-old virologist was in jail in a 1992 murder case.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to resign at 4:30 pm today

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee attends the North Block office in New Delhi for one last time today as he prepares to run for President of India. He said that he will submit his resignation today. Here are the 10 latest facts about his departure.

1)     Pranab Mukherjee will attend office today and at 4.30 p.m. will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to submit his resignation. He will also resign from the primary membership of the Congress Party. After meeting his colleagues in the Congress Working Committee on Monday, he said leaving the party was an ‘emotional moment’.

2)     There is no announcement yet on who will succeed him as finance minister. Speculation suggests that the prime minister may keep the portfolio with himself. For now, it is likely that Pranab Mukherjee would hand over the charge to him. Manmohan Singh already holds the ministries of space, atomic energy, planning, personnel, and public grievances and pensions.

3)      If that happens, it could push up the number of tasks that the prime minister’s office has to handle significantly. Also, Mr. Mukherjee headed a dozen empowered group of ministers committees or EGoMs that deal with critical issues as telecom, divestment, food security, water issues, gas pricing and large power projects, among others, according to the Cabinet Secretariat.

4)      Among major committees, Mr. Mukherjee headed the EGoM on vacation of spectrum and auction of 3G Spectrum, and to look into the grant of licence and allocation of 2G spectrum as well. This group is mandated with deciding on quantum of spectrum to be auctioned, spectrum charges, reserve price for auction, recommend measures for vacation of adequate additional spectrum by the existing large users such as Defence, Space, Paramilitary, etc.

5)      EGoM to consider issues concerning procurement, management of food grains stocks, revision of central issue prices of food grains and the proposed law on food security. Critically, it deals with minimum support price operations, management of central pool stocks of wheat and rice, food procurement/purchase/management of pulses and sugar.

6)      Decisions on price band and final price of sale of shares held by Government of India in all Central Public Sector Enterprises. This essentially is the group in which divestment decisions are taken, and it is manned by only two others – Home Minister P Chidambaram and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

7)      Besides these committees, the list of tasks for the new person in charge of North Block would be to douse negative investor sentiment. Investors want the government to cut borrowing by reducing the fiscal deficit. Mr. Mukherjee started off on a strong note on the fiscal consolidation front. In the first year of UPA-II, the fiscal deficit for FY2010 came in at 6.8 per cent, almost one percent less than the 7.8 per cent in fiscal 2009. Since then, it has been steadily downhill. In FY2012, it bloated to 5.9 per cent of gross domestic product, largely because of subsidy bills and welfare spending. The deficit target for FY13 has been set at 5.1 per cent of GDP but analysts believe it could go as high as 6 per cent.

8)      Vodafone’s 2007 acquisition of Hutchison Essar quickly snowballed into an investor sentiment problem after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee introduced a retrospective tax amendment that would require all overseas deals involving Indian assets to pay capital gains tax. While Vodafone claims paying about Rs 20,000 crore in taxes, interest and penalty will increase costs for subscribers, the move has left global investors wary of investing in India through such routes for fear of such large tax payouts. The new finance minister has his/her task cut out.

9)      Mr. Mukherjee has also announced his intention to curb black money, which often is repatriated to India disguised as investment by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). However, given the lack of regulatory clarity as to how this will done, legitimate FIIs and holders of P-notes have started to pull out their money, fearing harassment by tax authorities. The new person in charge has to convince investors that those who comply with rules will not be chased by tax authorities.

10) Some tough decision making on foreign direct investment or FDI is needed. Multi-brand retail, aviation, pension, insurance are some sectors where there is a need to act. Besides this, the implementation of goods and services tax and the direct tax code or DTC are other major challenges waiting for the new incumbent at the North Block.
